Generosity

"Each one should give what he has decided in his own mind, not grudgingly or because he is made to, for God loves a cheerful giver."  [2 Corinthians 9:7b]

"God loves a cheerful giver" are St. Paul's words to the early church community at Corinth. My sense is that Jesus never intended to grab us tightly, turn us upside down and shake us inside out; to squeeze all that can be squeezed out of us. Jesus never treats us like a tube of old toothpaste. That is why if you are giving until it hurts, please stop it. True generosity is rarely facilitated by threats of spiritual laxatives.  Yes, God loves a cheerful giver. God loves a happy giver; God desires a joyful giver. As a priest friend of mine used to say, "God invites us to be hilarious givers." Generosity and enjoyment go hand in hand.
